After 2 years of paralysis, the
Regional Government of Piura and the administration of the Alto Piura
Irrigation and Hydropower Project (PEIHAP) have re-launched preparations to
resume the work, which consists of irrigating 50,000 hectares, including new
lands and improving irrigation. To do this, it will be transferred from the
Huancabamba river (from the western slope) to the Rio Piura, on the Pacific
side (coast). Alto Piura is one of the projects
with the greatest momentum of the pending implementation, together with
projects such as Chavimochic III, Majes - Siguas II and Chinecas (see post).
The project also includes the
generation of up to 300 megawatts of electric power (with two hydroelectric
plants: Gramadal and Cashapite), in addition to the construction of 4
reservoirs and all the irrigation infrastructure in the lower area of the Piura
river, recalls a Gestión note ( 9.3.20) and PEIHAP's own information. The project is
located near the port of Bayovar, a natural outlet for the bioceanic corridors,
such as the Brazil-Peru
North Railway-Bioceanic Connection Project, promoted by the living forces
of the northern and eastern regions Peruvians and the Brazilian states of Acre,
Rondonia, Mato Groso, and Manaus. The Regional Government of Piura plans, in

Component I of the Project
consists of the drilling
of a 13-kilometer trans-Andean tunnel for water conduction (and the
adjoining embrasure dam), the same that, already in an advance of almost 20%,
started in 2016 and was suspended in 2018, when the contracted company Obrainsa
- Astaldi fell into suspension of payments.
